Lucas by Alison Bellringer follows the story of an orphan boy. After his parents' unexpected deaths Lucas stays with his neighbours, until one day, he hears the Copperleys talking about him. Lucas realizes that he has no place with the Copperleys and leaves their home… Eventually, Lucas finds refuge in the home of Seth and Ruby Rodgers, who adopt him… Lucas is a heartwarming coming-of-age tale. The main protagonist is such a likable character that I think both young and older readers will find it easy to relate to him. The strength of Bellringer's writing means you can't help but sympathize with Lucas' plight and want to see him succeed… Even the secondary characters have their own story arcs going on in the background. It makes the setting come alive, and the world feels so much more immersive to the reader. The narrative perfectly captures the emotional state of a homeless young orphan. The plot is paced nicely, and by the end, you don't want to put the book down. You want to spend as much time as possible with these characters. In conclusion, it's an engrossing story.
