Lost, Found, and Forever Friends – Thank You, Becky Rademaker

As a children’s author, you always hope your story reaches both the little ones it’s written for and the grown-ups who read alongside them. Becky Rademaker—mum and thoughtful reader—shared a review of Surprise at the Beach that truly captured everything I hoped to share with this story:

"At first glance Surprise at the Beach is a charmingly straightforward story about a builder and his rescue dog Buddy, along with their unexpected find at the local beach – a lost kitten named Freddie… But as we dig a little deeper, there is more to the story than first meets the eye… We witness the incredible and sometimes instantaneous bond that can form between animals and their human companions… The author also subtly weaves into the tale the weighty responsibility it is to bring an animal into your home… All in all, it is a sweet tale of lost and found, as well as the bonds we share with the animals in our lives.”

Becky, thank you—for reading so closely, and for seeing everything.

Yes, this story begins with a kitten and a rescue dog on a beach… but it’s really about so much more. It’s about trust, empathy, and the quiet but powerful way animals connect us to something gentle and healing in ourselves.

You so beautifully noted the hesitation Luke feels, the emotions of returning Freddie, and the very real weight of deciding whether a home is ready for a new life. These are such important lessons for young readers—and for adults too. Welcoming an animal into your life is a joy, but it’s also a promise.

I’m so glad the story resonated with your family, and I love that you called it “a sweet tale of lost and found.” That’s exactly what it is—Freddie was found, yes… but so was something even deeper: a sense of belonging.

Thank you again, Becky, for sharing your reflections so warmly. I’m grateful for your words—and for every parent who helps bring stories like this to life at bedtime, on the sofa, or curled up after an afternoon at the beach.
